While it is nice to change the background colour what I want to be
able to do is to import a jpg of some of the hand dyed fabrics from places
like Silweaver or Sugar Maple fabrics they can make a huge difference
to how the patterns looks is there any way to do this. I have tried just
change backgroud and then import the pattern on top but while it
gives you an idea of what the final result would be its not too clear

If you go to the canvas menu and then select "Background image" and load the scanned fabric image, does this give you what you want ? If not, what needs to be done differently ?

at what resolution or size should the scanned image be? I think on my quilting software it is something like 200x300

The size of the scan doesn't matter too much as you set the scale after you load the image. Try around 10x the chart size in stitches. So if you are making a chart 200x100 stitches, make the graghics file 2000x1000 which will give you 10 pixels width and height for each stitch position. If the result is not detailed enough, try a larger image. Note that the image is loaded into memory to don't make it too big or you will slow things down.

I know that I am late answering this but what I wanted was to imitate some of the multicoloured background fabrics that a lot of people now use so they don't have to stitch the background in
